Klarahill is driven by everyone's right to a dignified farewell

Funeral homes have an important function in society - to ensure a deceased person's dignified farewell and the next of kin's right to say goodbye. Klarahill is well positioned to be there for its customers in an increasingly consolidated industry.

Klarahill is Sweden's second largest funeral business with 70 offices throughout the country. It has been a rapid growth journey since its inception in 2014, with the goal of consolidating an industry that until today has been very fragmented. Their vision is to work for a society where a final farewell becomes dignified and important.

Becoming part of the Klarahill Group comes with many advantages for the individual undertaker. The way the company is structured, Klarahill can benefit from the experiences that are available in the offices in a unique way, while contributing expertise in IT, finance, marketing and business development from the head office. In this way, Klarahill is changing the entire industry. And their hard work shows in the outcome.

“We have an operational goal that we set a few years ago: To achieve 10,000 completed funeral missions per year in 2025. We almost didn't believe it then, but right now we see it as a realistic goal”, says Sven Ackell, CEO at Klarahill.

Funeral homes have an important role in guiding bereaved relatives in everything practical that concerns the deceased. There is a lot that needs to be decided. Here, Veronica Hallsénius, Regional Manager for Klarahill in Stockholm, has seen some remarkable changes in recent years.

“What has become more common over the years is a ceremony with an urn instead of a coffin. Then the deceased is cremated before the ceremony. A sadder development is that people choose not to have a ceremony at all, but just cremate and bury. I think that's the wrong way to go, because you miss a chance to say a final goodbye - something that can affect the entire grieving process”, says Veronica Hallsénius.

“I have also noticed that we get further questions about more sustainable choices for the funeral. Today there is a greater awareness of these issues. Then you want to include it in the decision-making connected to the funeral”, Veronica Hallsénius continues.

Sven Ackell is positive about the future for Klarahill. The funeral market is relatively stable, with around 90,000 deaths in Sweden annually. However, an increasing and aging population in the coming years will affect the development.

“I think Klarahill are well positioned. We have a driven and talented staff and are well equipped to take on the challenges that exist in the industry”, concludes Sven Ackell.
